Ronan is top of the tweets with 74,000 fansRonan is top of the tweets with 74,000 fans

LADY Gaga may be the newly crowned queen of Twitter, but Ronan Keating is Ireland's king of social networking.
The Boyzone singer has been named as the Irish star with the most followers here -- with an impressive 74,308 fans hanging on his every word.

Collins Photo Agency

Although Ronan took a hiatus from tweeting during his tumultuous year, he has become one of the site's most active users since he began his role as a judge on the X Factor Australia, regularly tweeting about his experiences.

But Ronan has pulled a Kanye West -- and in spite of his Twitter popularity, has decided not to follow anyone else on the website.

And in a trip back in time to the 1990s, it's once again the battle of the boybands.

Keating's main competition in the celebrity follower stakes is none other than Westlife singer Nicky Byrne, who has racked up 38,932 followers and counting.

While the singers may be Ireland's most followed celebrities, they still pale in comparison to the true leader of Irish Twitterland, the non-celebrity who reports under the alias MacTweeter.

This is the username coined by Apple, the brains behind the Mac computer and iPhone.

Following in Ronan's footsteps is life coach Sinead Duffy, nabbing second place, with radio star Chris Evans in third place.

Westlife concert success will boost town, says mayor

THE success of Saturday's Westlife concert proves Mansfield can support a live music venue, says its executive mayor.
Around 10,000 fans packed Field Mill Stadium while Mansfield Town were playing away at Kidderminster Harriers.

There had been concerns about poor ticket sales for the concert, which had a maximum capacity of 15,000.

But the district council's Executive Mayor, Tony Egginton, said there had been a last-minute surge.

Councillor Egginton said: "It went very, very well. Obviously the weather was kind and there were just a few spots of rain during the evening.

"Just under 9,000 tickets had been sold by the end of play on Friday and more than 1,000 were sold on Saturday.

"It was a great show and everybody thoroughly enjoyed it. They were all there right to the end.

"Hopefully it has done the football club a bit of good and made them a bit of money and given them a bit of momentum."

Westlife have performed several times at Nottingham's Trent FM Arena, but this was their first visit to Mansfield.

Mr Egginton compared the importance of the concert for the town to when Rebecca Adlington won two Olympic gold medals.

To help create a party atmosphere, entertainment was also provided in the Market Place, including live music, fairground rides and a mini-beach for youngsters.

The football club's three directors put their hands in their own pockets to bring the boyband to Mansfield.

Income will be used to strengthen the club.

"I think it proved beyond doubt Mansfield can support a live music venue. We will learn from it and move forward," added Mr Egginton.

Westlife Where We Are Now Tour 2010 Mansfield Town's Field Mill stadium

THE Westlife boys brought their brilliant Where We Are Now Tour to Mansfield Town's Field Mill.

It may not have been a sell out but Kian, Mark, Nicky and Shane performed as if it was. Even the rain couldn't dampen the audience's spirits.

Kicking off with What About Now from the current album Where We Are the band delivered what the crowd had been waiting for.

They gave us a good mix of old and new songs with favourites Swear It Again, Uptown Girl, the raunchy When You're Looking Like That; the slower Tell Me What Makes A Man and Flying Without Wings.

Their medley of cover hits included Kings of Leon's Sex on Fire, Beyonce's Halo, Black-Eyed Peas I've Got A Feeling and Thin Lizzy's Boys Are Back in Town, with Kian on electric guitar.

There was plenty of laughter when they began reading out some saucy messages on the fans' banners and then there was the obligatory Mexican wave that started at the top of the stands and finished on the pitch.

They finished the night off with the emotional You Raise Me Up and the spine-tingling I'll See You Again which was dedicated to Kian and Nicky's dads who both passed away last year.

Having been to see Westlife every year since they first performed without Brian McFadden they never disappoint.

The lads did say they would return to Mansfield and that they enjoyed playing new venues especially open air gigs. So could Field Mill become a venue for future top bands to visit? We'll have to wait and see.

Day of Mansfield fun planned for Westlife concert

WESTLIFE fans will be able to enjoy a host of other fun activities on the day their pop heroes hit the stage at Mansfield Town Football Club's ground on 21st August.

The town centre will host live music and other activites during that day - ahead of the gig for which tickets are still on sale.

It is also the final day of Mansfield's Beach Party - a week long event which will see the town centre Market Place transformed into a seaside resort, complete with sand play area, street entertainers, children's rides, stalls, prizes and even full size dodgems and twister.

Mansfield mayor Tony Egginton said: "Everyone in the town centre should have a bumper today.

"The town's people and businesses could make up to £250,000, which is big business.

"Westlife will attract the biggest ever crowd to our business community, and especially the town centre.

"It will be the biggest event Mansfield has ever seen.

"We saw a great day when Rebecca Adlington brought home two gold medals, and numerically, this will be just as big.
"
Mr Egginton says he hopes the town will co-ordinate its efforts to make the most of the day, and has already started discussions with Portland Retail Park about parking, while a park-and-ride service will operate from the Civic Centre to Field Mill.

"It will be a day to remember when we see an act which we never thought would come to Mansfield."

Westlife's 'fab four' - Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan, Mark Feehily and Shane Filan - have sold more than 43 million records globally and in the UK alone have scored nine multi-platinum albums and a record-breaking 14 Number One hits.

They are the second top act to play at the football club following in the footsteps of the X Factor Live tour, after club bosses signed a deal with concert management firm the Liz Hobbs Group.

The aim of the deal was to attract big names to Field Mill and compete with big cities like Nottingham and Sheffield.

Westlife saw their latest album 'Where We Are' reach number two in the UK album chart and have had a string of hits since the 1990s.

Last week, it was announced they would be joined for the gig by pop starlets Wonderland - the proteges of Westlife's Kian and X Factor judge Louis Walsh.

Mansfield Town FC director Steve Hymas said: "We are experiencing a big demand for tickets. We know it will be a fantastic night"

A total of 15,000 tickets are on sale and cost between £35-45.

Tickets for the Westlife concert on 21st August can be still be bought online at www.ticketmaster.com or www.stagsclubshop.com.
Or you can contact the stadium hotline at Field Mill on Mansfield 482482.

Miss you night? Not a chance, say Westlife fans

Not even torrential rain could keep Westlife’s 22,000 screaming fans away as they played to a packed stadium.

The Irish pop group sang a collection of their hits, including Flying Without Wings and Fool Again at the July Racecourse in Newmarket.

 Westlife: Picture Richard Patterson

With four costume changes, and their trademark bar stools, the band kept up the tempo with a rendition of I have a Feeling by R’n’B group, The Black Eyed peas.

A spokeswoman for the racecourse said:  “It was a complete sell-out and fantastic concert.

“The guys talked to the crowd and sang a mix of their old and new songs and the crowd went wild.”

Fans go wild for Westlife at Newbury

The Irish crooners performed this evening (Saturday) at the racecourse during the final Party in the Paddock event

DESPITE the rain, thousands of people turned out to the final Party in the Paddock performance of the year.
The day kicked off with the CGA Ladies Day and was followed by a live performance from the band.
The Irish crooners left the stage about an hour and a half ago after more than an hour on stage belting out their hits, including Flying Without Wings, You Raise Me Up and their recent hit single, What About Now.
A new attendance record was set when 30,000 racegoers flocked to the racecourse to enjoy the seven races and then the gig.
Among the guests were make up artist Jemma Kidd who formed part of the judging panel for the Fashions in the Field competition to find the most stylish ladies at the racecourse, where Rebecca Hughes, from Dublin, walked away with a holiday to Florida.
Joint managing director of Newbury Racecourse, Stephen Higgins, said: “The success of today is proof that the combination of quality horseracing, fashion and music appeals to a broad spectrum of people.
“We also hope that new racegoers at the course today benefitted from our newly launched “Inside Track” campaign and encourage return visits to us again.”

Westlife to make appearance at Newbury racecourse

Road closures will be enforced for the event tonight (Saturday)

NEWBURY Racecourse is bracing itself for one of the busiest days of the year so far - Party in the Paddock.
A one-way traffic system will be in place for the event today (Saturday) which features CGA Ladies Day and a live performance from Irish boy band Westlife.
The restrictions will be in place from 10.30am to 4pm and Racecourse Road will become one-way to allow two lanes of traffic to travel east towards the racecourse before the event and westbound after the event.
However, one change from last time will see traffic on Boundary Road able to travel to Racecourse Road and turn left, although all other traffic from Boundary Road will have to turn right onto York Road.
Traffic from the Westwood Road estate will have to exit onto Pyle Hill and Greenham Road.
Police motorcyclists will be on hand to take enforcement action, if necessary, and report anyone not complying with the temporary traffic regulation orders.
Taxi firms are understood to have special dispensation with the restrictions, but anyone found not complying with the orders faces a possible fixed penalty.
Last year, the corresponding Party in the Paddock date, combining Ladies Day with music from Simply Red, attracted a modern-day record crowd at the racecourse of about 27,000 and the Irish pop group are expected to be just as popular, with more than 26,000 people expected at the event tomorrow.
The first race at the fixture, which also incorporates CGA Ladies Day and a Fashions in the Field competition to find the best dressed lady, starts at 1.25pm.
The last race starts at 4.45pm and the Westlife concert will begin at about 5.15pm, continuing through until about 6.30pm.
Gates open for the day at 10.30am.

Nicky pops the cork

WESTLIFE star Nicky Byrne was more loved up than ever this week when he wined and dined his wife Georgina Ahern in London to celebrate their seventh wedding anniversary.

The couple are currently based in Britain along with their twin sons, Rocco and Jay (3), while Nicky and his bandmates Shane Filan, Mark Feehily and Cian Egan record material for their new album.

The group recently signed up to work with six-time Grammy nominee, John Shanks, who is responsible for teen sensation Miley Cyrus's new album, Can't Be Tamed.

However, the romantic Nicky (31) was determined not to neglect his childhood sweetheart on their special day and even posted a romantic tribute to her on his Twitter page.

"A very happy seventh wedding anniversary to my beautiful wife," Nicky wrote. "Here's to gazillions more."

The star also took some time out of his busy schedule to show his other half a good time, planning a night out at an exclusive restaurant.

"They've been in London all week, where they've been celebrating in style," said a source close to the star.

"They're also planning a trip back to the Chateau D'Esclimont in Gallardon,France, where they wed seven years ago, later this year," they added.

Before then, however, the star will join his bandmates for an intimate gig in front of 1,000 fans at the O2 next week.

The concert will be streamed live from the venue on the O2's website blueroom.ie.

Nicky is also due back on the airwaves next Sunday afternoon for his new weekly gig spinning discs alongside 2fm star Michael Cahill from 5pm to 7pm.

Westlife concert leaves disabled disappointed

PR GURU Max Clifford has criticised Sandown Park after his disabled daughter was unable to see Westlife in concert at the venue.
Max's daughter, Louise Clifford, 38, who has suffered from rheumatoid arthritis since the age of five, paid for a ticket for the disabled viewing area, making it clear she was a wheelchair user.
But when she arrived at the platform area with Abi Palmer and Denise Palmer-Davies, who both work for Max, there were about 60 able-bodied fans watching the show making it impossible for her or any of the other disabled visitors there to see the band.
Max Clifford, who was watching from a private box, had turned his phone off and didn't know what was going on.

But he said afterwards: "The concert was brilliant and Westlife were great but I feel very sad that disabled people who have so looked forward to it couldn't see a thing. They had a special evening ruined. It's a special occasion to be able to see Westlife in that situation, I can understand why they are so upset."
As the evening went on more and more people were expressing their concerns but nothing seemed to get done.
Miss Clifford, who does not need to use a wheelchair all the time but could not stand up the whole way through the show, explained: "I'm not a big Westlife fan but I thought it would be a bit of a giggle and I could enjoy the racing too. But when we got to the area we could not see a thing.
"We complained to the man on the door who I felt sorry for as he seemed to be unable to deal with the situation. There was a total lack of organisation. He was trying to get in touch with the manager but was told he was down the front with his family."
David Mackinnon, managing director at Sandown, said: "We have been made aware of feedback from a wheelchair user who attended our race evening. As a venue we aim to provide all racegoers with the best customer experience possible and as such we take all feedback very seriously.
"We await further information following which we will carry out a full review to ensure our provisions for wheelchair users are of the highest standard. On this particular evening we welcomed more than 150 wheelchair users. We take pride in our accessible facilities and specific provisions at every race day, which are normally well received.”

Westlife support act revealed for Mansfield gig

Tickets still on sale for visit of top pop band to Field Mill

A GIRL group tipped for the top will join Irish pop sensations Westlife for their summer open-air gig at Field Mill on 21st August.

Wonderland are a five-piece girl group who caught the eye of music fans when they appeared on Irish television's The Late Late Show, which famously launched Boyzone to superstardom.

The group was formed by Westlife band member Kian Egan and Louis Walsh, the X-Factor judging favourite.

They are currently taking part in the filming of a reality TV show documenting their time on the tour.

Director of Mansfield Town Football Club, Steve Hymas, said: "Westlife are such an extraordinary band that we are experiencing a big demand for tickets.

"Now that we have secured Wonderland for Westlife's final concert on the English leg of the tour, we know it will be a fantastic night."

A spokesman for the club said: "This adds even greater value to the concert. Wonderland are an exciting up and coming band, often likened to The Saturdays. Spectators on the night can now enjoy 'two for the price of one'.

"There are still plenty of tickets available for the concert – but time is of the essence."

Westlife saw their latest album 'Where We Are' reach number two in the UK album chart and have had a string of hits since the 1990s.

A total of 15,000 tickets are on sale and cost between £36-45. Tickets can be bought online at www.ticketmaster.com or www.stagsclubshop.com or by contacting the stadium hotline on 01623 482482.

Faenol Festival near Bangor off after low ticket sales

Festival-goers say the cost of Faenol may have been too much for some in the current economic climate

Poor ticket sales are blamed for the cancellation of the Faenol Festival - called off for the second time in as many years. The decision was announced by a "disappointed" opera star Bryn Terfel, who has backed the event near Bangor, Gwynedd.

Last month the event was offered nearly £250,000 of assembly government money.

The festival - which planned Westlife as its headline act - was first held in 2000 on the Faenol Estate.

Faenol Festival Trust chairman Sir David Henshaw said it was too soon to say if the event, also cancelled last year, would return.

Last month Terfel revealed that ticket sales were down for the festival, which was due to be the 10th.

At that time he said staging a festival in the current economic climate was "a challenge".

He has now said: "Unfortunately, advance ticket sales in this challenging economic climate have not been sufficient for us to feel confident that we can move ahead with the full festival.

"All I can say is that we have looked at the situation in great detail and from every possible angle. We have found no other workable solution."

In July, it was announced the festival was to be given nearly £250,000 of assembly government money over a three-year period.

The decision, by Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones, came days after the Arts Council of Wales cut grants to several arts organisations.

The move prompted Conservative Leader Nick Bourne and Liberal Democrat Eleanor Burnham, an honorary president of the Llangollen International Eisteddfod, to question the fairness of the funding.

The Welsh Assembly Government said it was disappointed, but pointed out that its funding was always subject to the festival going ahead.

Westlife will now play their concert at Llandudno's Venue Cymru

Full refund

Meanwhile, Terfel thanked festival goers who responded to his July appeal to support the festival by buying their tickets early, and also those who had supported the event since it began.

"By continuing with the Westlife element, we hope that we will be able to provide some of our valued audience with the entertainment promised and also provide the locality with some much needed business."

Gwynedd council leader Dyfed Edwards said the council would seek an early meeting with the event organisers to discuss its long-term future.

The Faenol's Westlife performance will now go ahead on 27 August in the arena at Venue Cymru in Llandudno in Conwy county.

All tickets for the Westlife concert at the Faenol Estate will be automatically valid for the show at Venue Cymru. Those with seated tickets who wish to attend will be refunded the balance.

‘Baffling’ line-up blamed as plug pulled on Faenol

POOR programming and even the Government’s emergency Budget were blamed yesterday for killing off this year’s Faenol Festival.

Opera legend Bryn Terfel was due to celebrate his annual music event’s 10th anniversary this year but low ticket sales forced organisers to pull the plug. It is not yet known whether it will be revived next year.

While many industry insiders said the event’s programming was to blame – including headlining the traditional Welsh concert with three English bands – a festival spokeswoman last night said tickets had been selling “really well” until new Chancellor George Osborne unveiled his emergency Budget in June, forcing people to tighten their purses.

The 2010 festival was due to open on August 27 with a performance from Westlife. Other concerts included the traditional opera night featuring Terfel and Mexican tenor Rolando Villazon; the annual Tân y Ddraig gig, renowned for highlighting the best in Welsh language music; and a comedy night – a new addition for 2010 – featuring Pub Landlord Al Murray.

Celebrated musician Bryn Fon, a regular performer at Tan y Ddraig, said there had been discontent that three English bands – The Feeling, Athlete and Shed Seven, all signed to festival producers Universal – were on the bill for the annual night of Welsh music.

“It [Tan y Ddraig] was always the stage for Welsh bands,” said Fon.

“People were gobsmacked by the line-up. They were trying to appeal to an audience that just wasn’t there. Music fans from Manchester and Liverpool were not going to come and see bands like The Feeling and Shed Seven who haven’t done much for a long time and Welsh audiences were not interested – they shot themselves in the foot.”

He also questioned the new comedy night. “Comedy would not work well in a festival setting,” he said. “I thought it was a strange thing to contemplate.”

Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens says music fans were baffled by this year’s line-up.

“It’s a shame Faenol’s not happening,” said Stephens, who is this week presenting a BBC Radio Cymru evening show from the Eisteddfod Maes. “But it didn’t catch people’s imagination. Staging bands like Shed Seven and Athlete who have not been hugely popular for many years left people baffled.

“Every festival also has to have a niche but I’m not sure Faenol knew what it was saying.”

TV presenter Beti George, who has hosted programmes for S4C on Faenol, said she was saddened by the festival’s closure this year.

But she says the fact that the festival took a break in 2009 before attempting this year’s comeback may have had a negative effect.

“If you miss a year, people get out of the rhythm,” she said. “Maybe they could have shrunk it a little so it was staged over two days. I feel sorry for Bryn [Terfel]. He has put so much effort into the festival.”

Last night a spokesman for the festival admitted ticket sales this year were at a record low.

“Ticket sales started off well so people liked the programming but the implications of the Budget changed people’s spending priorities.”

In his statement announcing the cancellation, Terfel said: “Unfortunately, advance ticket sales in this challenging economic climate have not been sufficient for us to feel confident that we can move ahead with the full festival. All I can say is that we have looked at the situation in great detail and from every possible angle. We have found no other workable solution.”

Festival chairman Sir David Henshaw added: “The team have worked tirelessly to explore each and every avenue and opportunity available to them. It is too soon to say what will happen in future years, and whether or not the festival will return.”

The Westlife performance will go ahead on August 27 as planned but it will now take place at Venue Cymru in Llandudno. Those who bought tickets for the festival should return them to their point of purchase by August 13 for a full refund.

Westlife bring the house down at Sandown Park in Esher, Surrey

Westlife brought the house down at Sandown Park racecourse last night, and even the police officers on duty could not resist tapping their feet to the Irish band's greatest hits.
Cheers from the sell-out crowd were deafening as the foursome took to the stage after an evening's racing, and those dedicated enough to get to the site the previous night were rewarded with a front-row view of all the action.
On duty PC Ian Hollingsworth certainly enjoyed the night, and said: "It's one of the best nights of my life. I was ecstatic when I found out I'd be here tonight. I wasn't able to sleep last night."

Also among the fans was a bride-to-be in full hen regalia, pledging to call off the wedding if one of hearthrobs proposed, which she had already cleared with her husband.

Another mini-fan was six-month-old Benjamin Thompson, from Kah Tao, Thailand.
He posed for pictures with mum Minee Thompson with an oversized Westlife T-shirt, borrowed from a merchandise stall inundated with fans after something to remember the night by.
His proud gran Julie Webster said: "He might grow up to be a big Westlife fan like me. I absolutely love them."
The band played most of the favourites, with a mix of classics such as You Raise Me Up and Mandy, as well as newer hits including What about Love and My Love.
Their version of the Black Eyed Peas' Tonight's Gonna be a Good Night got the crowd jumping, but the Boys Are Back in Town was the song that captured the imagination of six-year-old Myles Skinner.
He managed to draw his own crowd of fans with his energetic dance moves, along with his brother Shaw, 14.
Talking to the crowd, Westlife member and Cobham resident Shane Filan: "This is a special day for me because I live about 10 minutes from here. Thank you very much guys. Thank you so, so much for coming down today."
Mark Feehily went on to dedicate Flying Without Wings, and the whole show, to Claire.

Natasha "blown away"after meeting Westlife at their homecoming gig in Sligo

LOCAL woman Natasha Woods had a once in a lifetime experience on Friday when she got to meet her heroes Westlife at their homecoming concert in Lissadell House in Sligo.

The 27-year-old landed the dream prize after winning a competition on the Colm and Lucy show on 2FM.

Having made the trip to the North West with her best friend Amy Callaghan, Natasha admitted that she did not know what to expect but told The Dundalk Democrat on Monday that she was "blown away" by how nice Mark, Shane, Nicky and Kian were in person.

"I had a ball. It was absolutely brilliant," she said.

"I didn't expect it at all. Our seats were great and then about 7.45pm we were taken to the courtyard of Lissadell House where we met Louis Walsh. I think he was doing some filming for X Factor so one of the guys from Westlife must be a mentor.

"Then we met Jodi Albert and her band Wonderland who were supporting Westlife. They were really nice but we missed them on stage because we were waiting for Westlife.

"The lads were so nice to us. They had all the time in the world for us and posed for as many pictures as we wanted and signed anything we asked them to. They were so polite and must've given us about 15 minutes.

"They asked us all where we came from and made it feel quite personal. I explained that I had travelled over from Dundalk and Nicky said he had heard me winning the competition on the radio.

"Overall the whole experience was brilliant. I'll never forget it," she said.

Of course, the night didn't end there for Natasha – who manages Exhibit in the Marshes Shopping Centre - as she still had the concert to look forward to.

"They were absolutely brilliant live.

"They started with Where We Are and it just got better from there on. I'll See You Again was amazing but my favourite song was Already There.

"It was just an unbelievable show, an unbelievable experience and I'll never forget it."

Natasha's prize included an overnight stay in the Clarion Hotel but unfortunately she had to put off her stay there.

"We ended up not staying because Amy had work the next day so we just drove home after the concert.

"The hotel agreed to change the date for me and I plan to use it for my husband's birthday in September," she said.
