Westlife joins celebrity mourners at funeral of father-of-five radio presenter Gerry Ryan
Broadcaster and father-of-five Gerry Ryan was warmly remembered yesterday as a textbook super-dad and motormouth DJ too bright for this world.
He endeared himself to thousands of listeners as the voice of Irish radio
But it was his celebrity friends who summed up ‘the big man’ best when they paid tribute to Gerry Ryan at his funeral yesterday.
Irish president Mary McAleese, a friend after lecturing Ryan in Trinity College and working in RTE, former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds, designer John Rocha and pop group Westlife were among dozens of high-profile mourners.
Other celebrity pals who turned up to pay tribute included Boyzone’s Keith Duffy his wife Lisa, and Yvonne Keating the wife of Boyzone's Ronan Keating.
Westlife’s Shane, Kian, Nicky and Mark all arrived moments before the ceremony in a blacked out van and quickly entered the church in preparation for their moving rendition of ‘Your Raise me Up’ which they sung at the end of the ceremony.
The pop group gave their tribute in song, performing You Raise Me Up with members of the gospel choir.
U2, Ryan's favourite group who he supported throughout their career, sent a message from New York. 'Calling from New York on the Ryan Line, Ryan Line still open,' said lead singer Bono before the band performed their track With Or Without You.
'Goodbye Gerry, see you down the road,' the frontman said.
